This artifact is an antique cast iron Adams Patent Hand Grenade, officially patented by John Adams on January 10, 1865. These spherical, smooth-bodied grenades were used during the American Civil War by both Union and Confederate forces. The distinctive feature is the central threaded plug with three holes visible on top, designed to accept a specific percussion fuse mechanism (which is absent here). The white painted markings "6 LB SHOT" and "SWAGNER" appear to be modern annotations made by a previous collector, not original military markings.
Item Identification: Adams Patent Hand Grenade, Model 1865 (Civil War Era).
  • Materials: Cast iron body.
  • Design: Spherical, smooth-bodied grenade designed to be thrown.
  • Markings: Modern white paint markings "6 LB SHOT SWAGNER" added by a previous owner.
  • Condition: Aged condition with dark patina and surface wear consistent with a genuine 160-year-old artifact. The original fuse mechanism is missing.

Testimonials

The craftsmanship on this piece is extraordinary. The effigy carving and brass tacks tell a story you can feel in your hands. A centerpiece of my Great Lakes collection.

Collector of Native American Artifacts

Authentic history preserved perfectly. The condition exceeded expectations, and the provenance documentation gave me complete confidence. Worth every penny.

WWII History Enthusiast

Owning a piece of ordnance history like this is surreal. The casting detail is remarkable, and it's become the conversation starter in my Civil War display.

Civil War Collector

Finding an excavated Revolutionary War relic this intact is nearly impossible. The script is crisp, and knowing it was worn by a Continental soldier gives me chills.

Revolutionary War Historian

The Sheffield maker's mark and beaver tail handle make this an museum-quality piece. Exactly the kind of authentic trade-era artifact I've been searching for.
