This is an exceptionally rare and significant piece of American history, an authentic Revolutionary War-era Continental Army General Service button. Measuring approximately 7/8ths of an inch in diameter, this size confirms it was intended as a coat button for a soldier. This specific pattern, used circa 1777-1784, features a distinctive "USA" script monogram in the center, encircled by a reeded or rope-style border. The reverse side reveals its one-piece cast pewter construction, a method necessitated by material shortages during the war. As an excavated or "dug" relic, it displays a dark patina, surface corrosion, and a damaged original shank, all authentic signs of over 240 years of environmental exposure, providing a direct physical link to the soldiers who secured American independence.

  • Period: American Revolutionary War (circa 1777-1784).
  • Material: Cast pewter (white metal alloy).
  • Design: "USA" script monogram centered with a reeded/rope outer border (front); one-piece cast construction (back).
  • Dimensions: ~7/8 inch (approx. 22-23 mm) diameter.
  • Condition: Excavated/dug condition, exhibiting significant patina and surface corrosion. The original shank is mostly lost. This condition confirms authenticity as a genuine relic.
  • History: These buttons were vital for standardizing military dress in George Washington's army and are highly sought after by historians and collectors of early Americana.

Owning a piece of ordnance history like this is surreal. The casting detail is remarkable, and it's become the conversation starter in my Civil War display.

Finding an excavated Revolutionary War relic this intact is nearly impossible. The script is crisp, and knowing it was worn by a Continental soldier gives me chills.

The Sheffield maker's mark and beaver tail handle make this an museum-quality piece. Exactly the kind of authentic trade-era artifact I've been searching for.
