This is an exceptionally rare and historically significant artifact: an authentic Civil War-era Union Irish Brigade cap badge. Measuring approximately 2 inches in height, this insignia features the traditional Irish harp surmounted by a winged female bust (the Goddess Eire). These badges were privately purchased and worn proudly by members of the Irish Brigade as an identity item and a symbol of their heritage and allegiance. They were a vital part of the Irish-American identity during the war, particularly for regiments like the "Fighting 69th" New York Infantry, known for their green battle flags and Gaelic war cry, “fág an bealach!” or “Clear The Way!”. This insignia's aged patina and condition are consistent with a genuine 19th-century artifact, often recovered from battlefields or veteran estates.

  • Period: American Civil War (circa 1861-1865).
  • Material: Cast or die-stamped brass/alloy (white metal, in this case).
  • Design: Harp of Erin surmounted by a winged female head/bust (Goddess Eire).
  • Dimensions: Approximately 2 inches tall (based on the tape measure).
  • Condition: Aged, relic condition with a heavy greenish/dark patina. Original mounting prongs on the reverse are likely damaged or missing.
  • History: This badge was an unofficial identifier used by Irish-American militia units even before the Civil War and by the Fenian military units post-war. They represent the heavy sacrifices made by Irish immigrants to the Union cause.

Owning a piece of ordnance history like this is surreal. The casting detail is remarkable, and it's become the conversation starter in my Civil War display.

Civil War Collector

Finding an excavated Revolutionary War relic this intact is nearly impossible. The script is crisp, and knowing it was worn by a Continental soldier gives me chills.

Revolutionary War Historian

The Sheffield maker's mark and beaver tail handle make this an museum-quality piece. Exactly the kind of authentic trade-era artifact I've been searching for.
