The insignia measures approximately 2 inches in height and features the letters "USS" above two crossed arrows with fletching and arrowheads prominently displayed. The design was officially prescribed for wear by Indian Scouts from around 1890 (and unofficially earlier) and represents a vital, albeit complex, period of American military history. The badge is made of non-magnetic white metal alloy, such as coin silver or German silver. The reverse of the insignia confirms period-correct construction methods, featuring thin attachment prongs for securing the badge to a Kepi or campaign hat.
